Reasons for Sustainable Manufacturing

July 31,2019,Philippines—The image of dark and dirty facilities has been long associated with the manufacturing industry. Eventually, it was typically thought of as a business that does not care about the environment. Not to mention, Recover USA in their Industrial Waste Management: Waste Stream Statistics report from 2017 showed that the US alone produces around 7.6 billion tons of industrial waste every year which is still far from the total industrial waste the rest of the world generates yearly.

Even though the global manufacturing landscape has now dramatically changed due to integration of advanced technologies and the industry’s shift to becoming more of a white-collared industry, there is still the phenomenon of consumerism which encourages consumers to buy and demand for more products, and the global manufacturing companies to keep on feeding those demands by creating more products.

In an effort to minimize the generation of industrial waste, the industry has started encouraging every global manufacturing company to make their manufacturing solutions, especially the industrial manufacturing solutions, more eco-friendly. Here are the top four reasons why your company should also switch to sustainable manufacturing.

It improves marketability

Although consumerism is a real problem among consumers of all ages are facing today, many are starting to shift their mindset to sustainability. In fact, Nielsen in their The Evolution of the Sustainability Mindset report from 2018 show that 73% of global respondents say they would definitely or probably change their consumption habits to reduce their impact on the environment. The report also shows that 41% of respondents are willing to pay more for products that contain organic or all-natural ingredients, while 38% for products containing environmentally friendly materials.

By transitioning to sustainable manufacturing, you can improve your product’s marketability to the increasing population of environmentally aware consumers and look forward to increase on sales.

It saves on energy costs

Sustainable manufacturing require not only using sustainable materials for your products but also switching to more eco-friendly manufacturing working environment and processes. Save on energy costs by using energy-efficient light bulbs such as compact fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes or LEDs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, light bulbs like LEDs typically use about 25 to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, and even lasts three to 25 times longer.

Converting to renewable energy sources such as wind or solar can also help decrease and stabilize your energy costs.

It gives tax incentives

Despite producing tons of industrial waste, the global manufacturing industry is still a major economic driver in many countries worldwide. This is why the government from different countries are also further encouraging global manufacturing companies to make their manufacturing solutions greener by giving eco-friendly companies tax incentives.

In the Philippines, the Board of Investments (BOI) are handing out financial incentives to global manufacturing companies that promotes energy efficiency and conservation in their projects through the Climate Incentives for Manufacturing (CLIMA) program crafted under the 2017 Investments Priorities Plan (IPP).

It boosts morale and improves health

Implementing sustainable manufacturing in your company also has an impact on your employees. Reminding your employees that their work is making a positive difference in the industry and on the environment will definitely encourage them at work. It can also spark collaboration and teamwork between employees which can then boost the workplace morale and lead to more innovative product ideas.

Ultimately, pushing for sustainable manufacturing decreases hazardous wastes, emissions, and carbon footprint which does not only help improve the health and safety of your employees, but also of all people living in the planet.

There are only four reasons for sustainable manufacturing listed above, but they should be more than enough to encourage you to become a green-loving global manufacturing company.
