Four Reasons Why You Should Have a Solar-Powered Home

Given the increasing consumption of electricity in homes, solar energy could be your smartest option.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, your home has become the center of your life. It is the place for work, school, and personal time. It might also be the epicenter of bill shock. If your huge electricity bill isn’t enough of a reason for you to consider better and greener technology to power your home, we have four reasons to convince you.

The benefits of using solar energy in your home

A happier wallet
One of the biggest advantages of solar energy is it can give you significant savings. Depending on their size, efficiency, and orientation relative to the sun, some solar panels can produce more electricity than your home consumes. A solar power system will pay for itself in five to seven years and keep your electricity bill at a minimum—or zero—for decades.

Low maintenance costs
Most solar power systems don’t require a lot of maintenance. Because they have no moving parts that could break down or be affected by rust, you don’t have to worry about wear and tear.

Freedom from the grid
No more worrying every time your electric company announces scheduled power outages for maintenance reasons. Adding battery backup to your solar system will give you freedom and independence from your utility company.

A greener planet
Solar energy is clean, renewable, and unlimited energy that can be harnessed anywhere and will always be available. It reduces dependence on fossil fuels that produce harmful emissions that pollute the air, water, and soil. By using solar energy, you do your part in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Convinced? Before installing rooftop solar panels, there are a few things you should find out.

  • Do you need to do some repairs on your roof? Determine the condition of your roof. Is it old? Is there damage? It would be best to have repairs or replacements done before installing solar panels.
  • What is the shape and orientation of your roof? According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), solar panels are most efficient on “south-facing roofs with a slope between 15 and 40 degrees, though other roofs may be suitable too”.
  • How much weight can your roof support? Solar panels add weight. To prevent dangerous and costly collapses, make sure your roof can handle the extra weight. Have your roof assessed by professionals so they can determine if you will need additional structural support for solar panels.
  • Where will the rainwater go? Faulty drainage can cause leaks and other problems. Your contractor should make sure installation does not affect water runoff.
