The Best of Luxury EVs in 2022

Luxury EV vehicles are taking the car market by storm. Here’s a peek at some of the favorites topping many year-end lists for 2022.

As we transition from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles into the age of EVs, the OEMs we’ve trusted and loved throughout the years adapt and pivot to meet the demands of their market. It’s a very hi-tech, digital-minded market, one that is connected to the internet almost all the time, whose screens dominate essential parts of their day, and is always on the go.

Luxury car owners want all the hi-tech bells and whistles, and then some.

A smooth, sleek, beautifully designed machine that drives like a dream on a smooth highway, with a lot of legroom and plush interiors. How about a complete mini-cinema inside? A digital dashboard that assures the driver they’ve shut the garage door shut before it shows them the latest weather updates? Welcome to today’s luxury EV car, and we’ve got some of the best lined up.

The Best of Luxury EVs in 2022

  1. 2022 Tesla Model X

While several car journalists may say that the Tesla Model X’s level of luxury compared with other luxury EVs in the market today could be just a touch bit basic, make no mistake that the 2022 Tesla Model X is a thing of beauty. For drivers who like power and speed, the 2022 Tesla Model X can go from 0 to 60mph in a mere 2.5 seconds.

It has a total of 1,020 horsepower and is a standard all-wheel drive. The basic model has the best EPA-estimated driving range of 348 miles. There are some that call out some design elements of the 2022 Tesla Model X as being “gimmicky”, such as its yoke-style steering wheel, but interiors-wise, the cabin is clean and roomy. The price tag of the 2022 Tesla Model X starts at $126,490.

  1. BMW i7 EV

A fully electric vehicle that boasts of a fold-down movie screen in the backseat? That’s the BMW i7.

BMW revived its sub-brand the “i’ series in 2011, and 2022 sees its full EV model from the high-end 7 series launched. This is the first model to showcase BMW’s theater screen system which was first featured at CES in January 2022.

The i7 has a full 31-inch 8k ultra-wide TV that unfolds from the car roof. It is literally a mini-cinema in the backseat of a luxury vehicle. This amazing screen not only boasts crystal-clear images but also boasts stunning audio. Paired with a Bowers and Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, there are 36 speakers inside the car. With touchscreens easily accessible but discreetly placed in the rear door armrests, the display panels are located where the passenger’s hand would normally rest. The screen doubles as a tool for video conferencing because an on-the-go CEO takes his calls in style.

  1. Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV is like the baby of two of the company’s most celebrated cars: the Ioniq 5, which found itself in the Top 3 of 2022’s World Car of the Year, and the EV 6, which is based on the same platform as the Ioniq 5. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV is the best of both cars and is made more aerodynamically efficient. Automobile critics are even calling the Ioniq 6 EV only second to the Mercedes Benz EQS.

According to Hyundai’s EVP and head of Hyundai Global Design Center, Sangyup Lee, the Ioniq 6 EV is like the Porsche 911, albeit with four doors, and adapts a “streamline topology”.

The Ioniq 6 EV leans more toward drivers valuing performance over family-friendly features. Its stunning performance and aerodynamic superiority are apparent in design elements such as in its active air flaps  at the front wheel gap reducers and in the downward “winglets” found on the ends of its rear spoiler. This helps reduce drag and makes it drive like a dream.

The Ioniq 6 EV is deceptively compact, but its wheelbase is long at 2.95m, its total length is 4.85m, its width is 1.88m and is 1.5m high. A roomy car disguising itself as cute.

A stylish if retro flourish is the “parametric pixel high-mounted stomp lamp” found on the car’s rear wing. If you’ve ever heard of the show “Knight Ride” from the 80s, then that’s 100 bonus hipster points for you.

  1. 2022 Audi E-Tron GT

Automobile critics are calling the 2022 Audi E-tron GT as “engaging and athletic”, with an awesome interior. Some of its shining points are that it’s got power to spare, with a range of well-beyond 200 miles. With a lot of accessible, and easy to use technology, this makes a beautiful and fun ride. On the downside, critics are noting a small trunk and a hefty price tag. The 2022 Audi E-Tron GT ranges from $102,400-$142,400.

  1. 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB is a luxury SUV that is sure to appear on many “best” lists this year. It comes with a choice of two powertrains: the EQB300 and the EQB350. The former is run by an electric motor producing 225 horsepower and 288 pound-feet of torque. The latter, on the other hand, has a dual motor setup with 288 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. Its 66.6 kmh battery pack can be found in the floor of its chassis.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB boasts of the same posh cabin as its ICE counterpart, the GLB. Its EPA-rated driving range is yet to be determined, but car journalists are pegging it at a 225 miles/charge estimate.
