How to Plan Your Virtual Christmas Party

Just because we all can’t be in one place doesn’t mean we have to cancel Christmas. Here are some tips and tricks to spice up your quarantine Christmas party.

COVID-19 is not beating Christmas! This favorite Filipino holiday, the longest Christmas season in the world, can still be celebrated with love and laughter—online.

Add some zing to your Zoom parties this Quarantine Christmas with these fun and creative party tips and ideas.

Send virtual invitations.
We’re not talking about the meeting links we’ve been sending and receiving all year. Channel your inner Martha Stewart and get cracking on a bright and festive virtual invitation.

Check out these sites for free templates:

Remember to send your e-vite a few weeks before the event so your guests can mark their calendars.

Have a dress code.
No more business top and bedtime pajamas combination—it’s time for everyone to suit up and glam up.

Or, you could go nuts with the dress code—from ugly sweaters to outfits inspired by The Great Gatsby. To encourage everyone to dress up, you could make it a contest. Ask partygoers to cast their votes and have prizes ready for the winners.

Exchange gifts.
Santa has gotten tech-savvy. Use a gift exchange generator to pick names. You can send each other gifts and open presents together at your virtual Christmas party. To minimize trips out of the house, encourage everyone to shop for gifts online and have them delivered.

Share a meal.
What’s a Filipino Christmas without a ton of food? Food is how we show our love. Food is how we greet people! You can coordinate with your favorite restaurant for them to deliver party meals to all your guests. You could also send guests food gift cards from mobile food delivery apps so that your guests can choose their own Christmas party meal. We’ve been ordering groceries and food online these days, so let’s use the same technology for this special occasion.

Get playful.
Here are some fun games and activities to inspire you.

1. Virtual Bingo
The first player to mark five squares in a diagonal, vertical, or horizontal row wins. Because everyone can relate, you could make it a lockdown-themed bingo card.

Here’s a template you can use and send to your guests for them to print out or save on their mobile devices.

2. Bring Me
This is a great game to play if there are children at your virtual Christmas party. You can make it a mix of common home and holiday items.

Here’s a list of items you could include in your game:

  • Christmas angel
  • Smartphone
  • Queso de bola
  • Coffee mug
  • Santa hat
  • Passport
  • Refrigerator magnet
  • Wrapped Christmas present
  • Lipstick
  • Face mask
  • Book

3. Name that Christmas Song
This game is sure to be a hit with music-loving Pinoys of all ages. You can play snippets of Christmas songs and give prizes to the first one to guess the song title correctly.

Here are some popular yuletide tunes to get you started:

  • All I Want for Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey
  • Last Christmas – Wham!
  • Pasko Na, Sinta Ko – Gary Valenciano
  • Christmas in Our Hearts – Jose Mari Chan
  • A Perfect Christmas – Jose Mari Chan
  • Kumukutikutitap – Joey Albert
  • I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas – Bing Crosby
  • Joy to the World – Isaac Watts

Say cheese!
Capture the cyber-memories with screenshots. If there are too many of you in your party, create breakout rooms so everyone can be on the screen. You can ask your guests to prepare funny hats, masks, and even feather boas for an even more festive vibe.

Christmas this year will be very different for many of us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use technology to spread love and cheer. Have a very merry virtual Christmas, everyone!
