The Best Post-apocalyptic Sci Fi Shows to Binge Right Now

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and these shows are making us feel fine.

There’s something about what happens after the world ends that has grabbed the attention (and sometimes hearts) of audiences across the world. We can’t resist speculating about the fate of mankind after the apocalypse hits when all our resources have been depleted, and all that’s left is scorched earth. How will man cope? How do we go on? Well, as Professor Ian Malcolm from “Jurassic Park” says, “Life finds a way”, at least in these programs, anyway.

If you’re in the mood to binge some post-apocalyptic/dystopian series over the weekend, look no further. We’ve rounded up some of the best new series, as well as some classic end-of-the-world shows you may have missed the first time (or simply just want to re-watch!)

The Best Post-apocalyptic Sci Fi Shows to Binge Right Now

The Undead will inherit the Earth

Zombies have long since been a favorite fixture of speculative fiction, but in recent years their appearance in movies and series has leaned towards science fiction rather than the supernatural.

Whether products of deadly viruses or mutations gone awry, zombies as the harbinger of the end times have ironically breathed new life into our screens and we simply can’t get enough!

The Walking Dead (2010-2022)

(Available to stream on Disney+)

Based on the Image graphic novel by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charles Adlard, “The Walking Dead” (TWD) first aired in the U.S. on AMC in 2010 and lasted for twelve seasons!

The King of zombie apocalypse dramas follows its protagonist Rick Grimes, a sheriff’s deputy who wakes up from a coma and finds the world has drastically changed. Its ensemble cast grabbed viewers from the get-go, and as they followed its storyline through the eyes of its survivors, each TWD fan had their favorite characters whom they rooted for.

Through its twelve-year run, many of these fan favorites have been killed off in epic ways, and each one of them was heartbreaking. TWD has spawned not only a hit TV series but a spin-off as well, “Fear The Walking Dead”, which serves as a prequel to the events in the original series. “The Walking Dead” also has a video game series across many popular gaming platforms such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, as well as mobile platforms Android and iOS.

Kingdom (2019-2020)

(Available to stream on Netflix)

Zombies in Korea’s Joseon era! That’s the series. Beautifully shot, with amazing production design worthy of a cinematic screen, an astounding cast that includes superstars such as Ju Jihoon and Bae Doona, and an original story that grips viewers from its pilot episode, “Kingdom” raised the bar for what a zombie outbreak drama could be. While it only had two seasons on the streaming platform, a prequel feature, “Ashin of the North” was released in 2021.

All of Us Are Dead (2022)

(Available to stream on Netflix)

“All of Us Are Dead” is also a Korean-produced zombie apocalypse series. This time, it’s set inside a high school where trapped students must find their way out of the school to survive. The question is: what will they find when they make their way out? Based on the popular webtoon of the same title, “All of Us Are Dead” feels like   “Battle Royale”, but make it zombies!

Climate Change is Gonna Get You

Atmos Earth defines “ecological horror” or “eco-horror” as “evil as a result of our own fractured relationship with the environment”. This covers the disasters brought on by climate change, viruses unleashed on the general public, and even freakishly large and/or violent animals attacking humans. Believe it or not, “King Kong”, along with other “creature features” can be classified as “eco-horror”.

Station Eleven (2021-2022)

(Available to stream on HBO Go)

Based on the novel of the same title by Emily St. John. Unlike the previously mentioned “The Walking Dead”, this series is short and sweet and ran a total of ten episodes. The limited series is about a group of survivors twenty years after a global flu pandemic (yikes) wipes out most of the Earth’s population. Hits too close to home? Too soon to revisit what-if’s when we’ve barely come out alive from the last global pandemic? Maybe, but give it a chance. “Station Eleven” is gripping because of its ensemble cast, dramatic beats, and original story.

Extrapolations (2023)

(Available to stream on AppleTV+)

Featuring a powerhouse cast comprised of actors such as Meryl Streep, Gemma Chan, Kit Harrington, Tobey Maguire, and Edward Norton, “Extrapolations” is a limited series made up of eight interlinked stories. According to Apple TV+, these stories, which are told over thirty-three years, “explore how our planet’s changing climate will affect family, work, faith, and survival.”

The Last of Us (2023)

(Available to stream on HBO Go)

We’ve covered zombie apocalypse and eco-horror apocalypse. “The Last of Us” marries the best (or worst) of both worlds. The hit adaptation of the best-selling 2013 video game of the same title, “The Last of Us” is set in 2023 (!) after a global pandemic caused by a fungus that causes people to behave like zombies. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, the show has been generally praised by viewers and quickly scored its fanbase from both players of the video game and new viewers who have never played it before.
